Contemporaneamente alla classe D VI, le Ferrovie Statali Bavaresi acquistarono anche locomotive a 3 assi, la Classe D VII.
Dal 1880 al 1895 Krauss e Maffei costruirono un totale di 75 macchine, anch'esse equipaggiate con il freno ad aria Hardy, e anche freni a contropressione Riggenbach.
Le locomotive furono rilevate dalla Deutsche Reichsbahn, il ritiro dell'ultima unità avvenne nel 1935.
Due macchine, la BR 98 7601 e BR 98 7639 rimasero in attività fino al 1960, utilizzate come locomotive da manovra nel Deposito Locomotive di Würzburg la prima, e nel Deposito della Stazione di Norimberga la seconda.
Krauss consegnò 2 macchine molto simili alla LAG, già nel 1908, che giunsero alle Deutsche Reichsbahn nel 1927 e classificate: BR 98 7691-7692*.
