Le prime locomotive diesel per servizio passeggeri prodotte da ALCO, a partire dal 1934 furono la serie DL (Diesel Locomotive). Il modello della serie che ebbe maggior diffusione fu la DL-9.

Nel Midwest fu la Missouri Pacific Railroad (MP), meglio conosciuta come MoPac, tra le maggiori acquirenti per ALCO. Una FA sopra e una PA-3 sotto a Saint Louis, il 3 giugno del 1957. (Foto: Joe McMillan)
