Nel settembre 1977, l'uso di locomotive della Classe 01 davanti a treni espressi tra Dresda e Berlino terminò.
Tuttavia, ci vollero altri dieci anni prima che le locomotive a vapore fossero completamente ritirate dalla Reichsbahn, nell'ex DDR.
