25 gennaio 1948: la F3A 19L, in testa a El Capitan, perde il controllo dei freni e va lunga alla Union Passenger Terminal di Los Angeles (LAUPT). Il treno si schianta attraverso un paraurti in acciaio e un muro di cemento e si ferma, con la metà anteriore della locomotiva, 6 metri sopra Aliso Street. Nessun infortunio, ma il macchinista perde il lavoro.

Nel 1967 la Santa Fe commissionò alla EMD sette FP45, versione passeggeri delle SD45, da utilizzare in testa al Super Chief, in sostituzione delle ormai stanche F7. Le nuove macchine furono consegnate all'inizio del 1968, solo tre anni prima che il prestigioso treno terminasse definitivamente il suo servizio. Crookton, Arizona, il 16 marzo 1969.
