Dal 1970, per un ventennio, le E 03 hanno dominato la scena in testa ai treni più prestigiosi, sia nazionali sia internazionali, TEE prima e InterCity in seguito.
Nemmeno le più moderne BR 120 riuscirono a contrastarle, solo l'alta velocità con gli ICE decretò il loro declino.
E con immagini come questa un tempo le DB pubblicizzavano i viaggi sui loro treni (sullo sfondo la fortezza Marienberg di Würzburg). (Foto: W. Studer) |

Il 14 aprile 1983 il Reno inondò Oberwesel (nella foto).
A quel tempo tre collegamenti TEE erano ancora in servizio nella media valle del Reno:
"Rembrandt" (Stoccarda-Amsterdam), "Albert Schweitzer" (Dortmund-Strasburgo) e "Rheingold" (Basilea-Amsterdam).

Il 21 marzo 1987, la BR 103 128 con l'IC 691 transita a Geislingen (Steige), dove incontra il “Gläserne Zug” in viaggio turistico e due E 94 utilizzate in spinta sulla rampa.
