I due prototipi (BB), costruiti nel 1959 da Lokomotivbau Karl Marx Babelsberg (LKM), erano equipaggiati con trasmissione idraulica Voith.
Le V 180.0 a 4 assi di prima serie, equipaggiate con due motori da 900 CV, furono prodotte (85 unità) dal 1962 al 1965 da LKM (compresa la trasmissione). |

La serie delle V 180.2 a 6 assi, con motori da 1000 CV, furono prodotte (205 unità) da LKM di Posdam tra il 1966 e il 1970. Le ultime già classificate come BR 118.2. |

Nell'agosto 1965 iniziò la consegna delle V 180.1 di seconda serie, che erano equipaggiate con due motori da 1000 CV. La foto scattata nell'inverno del 1965/66 mostra la V 180 101 (BB) nella stazione centrale di Dresda. (Foto: G. Otte)
Dal 1979 al 1987, anche 45 locomotive (BB) della prima serie furono equipaggiate con nuovi motori da 1000 CV e 7 con motori da 1200 CV. Queste macchine andarono a costituire la serie 118.5. |
